Ever wonder what sea otters do during winter storms? Many of them seek out sheltered coves or wrap themselves in kelp. However, otter moms have been known to swim in a large circular pattern, speedily swimming upwind and slowly coasting downwind allowing the pup to nurse and catch a few zz’s on the smooth ride back.
A wild momma sea otter is with her pup almost constantly for 6 months providing food, protection, grooming services (very important!) and a good resting spot as needed. She only leaves the pup to dive for food and is able to find her floaty fluffball again by his distinctive high-pitched cry.
The New England Aquarium’s explorers make a stop to see our otters! Check out these great photos.
”And look, he’s still at it with that damned rock. Just go to Home Depot, get a Black and Decker!”
Our hero, Randall (of Honey Badger fame), made this hilarious video about the darling sea otter, entirely comprised of footage we shot around the Monterey Peninsula. A clip of this is even featured in the film!
